DR. NATHAN WONG

It was at an early age that Dr. Nathan Wong got his braces and he’s been an advocate of dentistry ever since. He enjoyed his frequent trips to the dentist and orthodontist so much that it was his destiny to become a dentist - and he did exactly that.

Dr. Wong studied at the University of Alberta for his undergrad before attending the University of Manitoba to pursue his degree and dream job in dentistry. When he’s not flexing his knowledge as a car enthusiast or relaxing to the smooth vibes of the latest Weeknd record, you’ll find Dr. Wong taking the very best care of his patients at FLOSS Dentistry at Chappelle Gardens in sunny Edmonton, Alberta. If you are in Edmonton, be sure to book your dental exam and fall in love with state-of-the-are technology: InvisAlign, CAD/CAM milled crowns in a day, Botox, and more.

How did you end up becoming a Dentist?

At the age of 10 I was diagnosed with an improper bite which is commonly known as malocclusion. I really enjoyed my visits to the dentist and orthodontist as a child and loved seeing the results. Shortly after that I knew that I would pursue dentistry as a career.

How did Floss Dentistry come to be?

Floss Dentistry is fresh, stylish, and brings something new and different to the dental industry. The philosophy is really quite simple: to provide a great patient experience which is what I believe in as well.

Do you still wear braces?

I love fixing the bites of my patients and changing their smiles to help them propel to maximum potential. I don’t wear my braces anymore but still wear my retainer every night!

What is your best memory as a dentist?

Volunteering at the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Dentistry as a clinical instructor and teaching the new generation of dental students what NOT to do!

What is one of the biggest myths about teeth that your patients come to you to be debunked?

Many patients think that straightening teeth is only for aesthetic reasons and are afraid that it is costly and uncomfortable. With today’s technology, fixing a bite AND straightening teeth for functional purposes with clear aligners - it doesn’t have to be!

The traditional way of protecting teeth at risk of fracture is to create a crown. Many patients think that this has to include mouthfuls of goop and multiple visits to complete. With the advent of CEREC, a CAD/CAM design and milling program, gone are those days of traditional impressions and many visits to complete one procedure! Just take a quick scan with a digital camera and mill the crown right in front of your eyes now.

People associate Botox with plastic-looking faces but using the spectrum of today’s neuromodulators can really help people that grind or clench their teeth at night. By targeting the muscles that cause wrinkles and deep lines in the face that are also responsible for grinding and clenching - we can turn down the activity in those muscles like turning down a light with a dimmer switch!
